Vinayak Chaturthi – The festival of Lord Ganesha

Today 19th September 2012 is a very special day in India. Today the festival of ‘Vinayak Chaturthi’ begins. The festival of  Vinayak or Ganesh Chaturthi has special significance in the life of Hindus. This festival is celebrated for 10 days with great enthusiasm in India. Ganesh Chaturthi is a celebration of the Lord’s birth anniversary The festival is celebrated in a very grand manner in the city of Mumbai. It is celebrated all over the states of Maharastra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnatake and Goa in India.

In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha is considered to be the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He is the most beloved and adorable son of Goddess Parvati. He is also known as Vinayaka, Ganapati, Ekadanta, Gajanana, Mangalmurti, Vakratunda and Vigneshwarya. These names are in Sanskrit Language which is the ancient language of India. It is believed that Lord Shiva announced to the entire Universe that Lord Ganesha is superior to all other Gods in Hinduism and should be worshipped before worshipping any other God.

In India, it is customary to invoke theblessings of Lord Ganesha before starting any activity like a journey, an exam, a job interview or even any worship or ceremony. Marraiges according to Hindu rituals strictly begin with a prayer to Lord Ganesha to make the marriage a successful one without any disturbance. House warming ceremonies also begin with Lord Ganesha’s blessings.

Hindus believe that Lord Ganesha symbolizes auspiciousness, calmness and supreme bliss.

1. He is the remover of obstacles. People worship him for faith, devotion, success, happiness and prosperity. 

2. He is the Lord of Education, Knowledge and Wisdom.

3. He represents Intelligence, presence of mind and also purity of mind.

Preparations of the festival can be seen a month before onwards. Markets are full of Ganesha idols and all other things required to worship Lord Ganesha. People bring idols of Lord Ganesha at an auspicious time on the day or one day before Ganesh Chaturthi and worship the idol at home with devotion for 10 days. After 10 days of worship, the idol of God is taken in a colourful procession ad is immersed into water.

Ganesha is famous all over the World and his idols are very poplar much in demand. I wish everyone a happy and auspicious Vinayak Chaturthi. May we all seek  calmness of mind, Intelligence, Knowledge and Pure devotion as blessings from Lord Ganesha.
